This is supervisory work in coordinating the activities of a large group of subordinates engaged in custodial, and security work in municipal parks, buildings and sites.An incumbent plans, assigns, supervises, schedules, checks and evaluates, directly and through subordinates, the work of a large group of staff; hires, trains and conducts performance reviews; maximizes the efficient utilization of assigned staff to meet priorities by establishing work schedules and adjusting and/or rescheduling workloads and assignments. Prepares, monitors and controls the department's custodial, security and building maintenance budgets; prepares cost estimates for custodial work; purchases supplies and equipment and prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports. Participates in preparing and reviewing preventive maintenance schedules, service and repair estimates for civic buildings; liaises with other municipal departments with respect to building maintenance and repair matters. Processes employee grievances and/or submits confidential reports in connection with the same. Develops and, upon approval, implements and monitors agreed upon goals and objectives of the department; examines new products, equipment, materials and methods applicable to the work, makes recommendations regarding the purchase or implementation of same to a supervisor. Performs related work as required.Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 preferably supplemented by courses related to the work; considerable related experience in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial, and minor building repair and maintenance work; departmental policy and procedures governing the work performed. Sound knowledge of budget estimating principles and methods. Ability to hire, train, plan, assign, supervise and review the work of a large group of subordinates engaged in custodial duties. Ability to prepare, monitor, and control the department's custodial, security and building maintenance budgets, and to prepare cost estimates for custodial services. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts on matters of a difficult or contentious nature; to prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to the work.
