With this in mind, comes great responsibility - we seek likeminded individuals who are passionate about the community, work with integrity and respect, and are innovative when it comes to the work and services Burnaby provides to our citizens.Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, the Senior Advisor, Indigenous Relations assists in providing leadership, expertise, and support to staff to create and maintain a climate of commitment to reconciliation and relationships with the host Nations on whose unceded territory the City of Burnaby is located, and Indigenous Peoples living in the City. The position provides coordination and research support, technical expertise, guidance and mentoring to internal and external stakeholders; organizes and may participate in committees and working groups and provides guidance and advice to same, as well as supports related event planning; supports the implementation for an Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Strategy at the City; establishes and maintains positive and effective relationships with internal and external contacts, host Nations and Indigenous organizations. Performs related work as required.Qualifications include Bachelor?s Degree supplemented by courses in Indigenous Relations plus five years of recent, related experience working with Indigenous peoples or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. The role requires considerable knowledge of regional, provincial, and federal programs, policies, and procedures applicable to Indigenous issues and interests in British Columbia, Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and its associated Action Plan and related legislation, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, and other foundational documents on Indigenous Relations in British Columbia and Canada; sound knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and cultural protocols, as well as Indigenous relations in British Columbia. This role requires the ability to research, develop and recommend new and improved plans, programs and procedures to address identified needs and issues; research, review, analyze, interpret, compile and make recommendations on complex issues; demonstrate persistence in overcoming obstacles; build strong working partnerships with internal and external contacts, host Nations and other levels of government to achieve mutual objectives and informed decision-making; communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to make presentations; persuade others and resolve issues under circumstances that may be political and sensitive using considerable independent judgment; work effectively and cooperatively with internal and external contacts with skill, tact and diplomacy; and plan, organize, coordinate and perform work requiring attention to detail in a timely manner. The role also requires skill in the use of various software applications.
