Demands, duties, qualifications Job Summary The Psychologist works closely with the interdisciplinary team (Neurologist, Developmental Pediatrician, Social Worker, Physiotherapist, Recreational Therapy Specialist, Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Pathologist, and other specialties) providing services to children and their families aged 0-18. The Development and Rehabilitation Team is a specialized team that serves a very diverse population of children and adolescents. The psychologist works within multiple specialized clinics including Musculoskeletal, Down Syndrome, Craniofacial, Neuromuscular, Neuromotor, and Cerebral Palsy (includes brain injuries). Team members must not only be experts in their respective fields, but also highly versed in areas of neurology, pharmacological interventions, genetics, neurodevelopment, rehabilitation, and chronic illness. Further, the psychologist in this position is responsible for one of three travelling clinics to remote regions of the province (the other psychologist for the service covers the other two regions). This entails having a wide knowledge of cultural, linguistic, and historic background with which to create culturally sound assessments and intervention for individuals living in those regions.This position functions autonomously and uses critical thinking and independent analysis/judgment in the application of specialized psychological knowledge and principles in clinical practice. The incumbent is responsible for the provision of psychological/cognitive assessment, standardized psychometric testing, formulation of the diagnosis based upon the DSM-5 criterion, and therapeutic intervention for children/adolescents and their families within a chronic illness and physical disability framework. The incumbent provides/supervises specialized therapy in situations where the application of professional analysis based upon a broad range of theoretical frameworks in complex practice situations is essential. The clinician has a specialty area of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental conditions and functions autonomously using independent judgment in determining appropriate assessment, diagnosis and interventions and then developing, implementing, and evaluating/analyzing treatment plans. Work involves providing clinical education and consultation to physicians and other professional personnel; mentoring; coaching and clinical consultation to enhance the delivery of client care to inpatients, day patients, and outpatients; provision of leadership direction for professional development; clinical education and consultation with other organizations and agencies; research and evaluation of services; ensuring compliance with professional standards; and development and implementation of psychology policies as they affect population groups.
