Job details
Education: No degree, certificate or diploma. Work setting: Bake shop. Restaurant. Cafeteria. Ranks of chefs: Pastry chef. Tasks: Prepare dough for pies, bread, rolls and sweet goods, batters for muffins, cookies and cakes and icings and frostings according to recipes or special customer orders. Prepare pastry for special occasions, such as weddings and birthdays. Requisition or order materials, equipment and supplies. Bake mixed dough and batters. Train staff in preparation, cooking and handling of food. Prepare special orders. Frost and decorate cakes and baked goods. Train staff. Inspect kitchen and food service areas. Oversee sales and merchandising of baked goods. Create new recipes. Analyze operating costs and other data. Plan menus and ensure food meets quality standards. Demonstrate new cooking techniques and new equipment to cooking staff. Prepare and cook complete meals and specialty foods for events such as banquets. Requisition food and kitchen supplies. Prepare and cook meals or specialty foods. Food specialties: Desserts and pastries. Wedding and specialty cakes. Donuts and muffins. Cake decorating. Chocolate. Bakery goods and desserts. Work conditions and physical capabilities: Attention to detail. Physically demanding. Standing for extended periods. Work under pressure.
