*Overall Purpose of Your Job*
This position involves a variety of responsibilities pertaining to the design of research and teaching laboratory setups, as well as the safe and effective operation of the laboratories, and the management of equipment. The position also involves contributing to teaching and supporting graduate students and the supervision of graduate course projects involving laboratory experiments.
*Reporting relationship*
The Senior Technician reports to the Principle Investigator.
*Accountability*
The incumbent is accountable for the design of new experimental set-ups, the effective use of equipment, and the safe operation of labs.
*Position scope*
The incumbent will work with the PI and the research group members to develop experimental setups for research based on requirements provided by the PI. The incumbent will advise and train graduate students on the safe and effective use of laboratory equipment and setups. He/she will also procure and manage shared equipment and advise graduate students in their design courses. The incumbent will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and problem solving of laboratory setups and equipment.
*Judgment and autonomy*
The incumbent exercises significant autonomy in advising the PI and their research group on technological matters, and in establishing work schedules of shared equipment and safety management of research and teaching labs.
*Working conditions and physical environment*
The incumbent normally works in an office and a laboratory environment where minimal physical exertion is required. However, the incumbent may occasionally be required to do lifting, bending and kneeling. The incumbent may be exposed to lasers and chemicals.
*Quality and process*
The incumbent will ensure that new laboratory setups conform to technical and safety standards and procedures for the proper and safe use of setups and shared equipment are in place. He/ she develops and implements improvements on procedures and systems that support the activities of the PI and the research group The incumbent regularly sees to the most-up-to-date training of the research group and ensures measures are implemented for the continuous training of the PI and students research equipment.
*Decision Making*
* Decide on design for setups in research laboratories.
* Prioritize lab design tasks.
* Decide on management methodology for research equipment.
* Make operational decisions for the safe operation of laboratories.
*Education and Experience Required *
* Bachelor?s degree in Chemical and Materials Engineering, or a related field with 4-7 years of relevant experience in an industrial setting, both in a laboratory and in an engineering setting. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
* Prior experience in a supervisory role.
* Experience with major chemical engineering research equipment (e.g., GC, TGA, etc.)
* Good spoken and written English (Level 4); capable of communicating effectively with students and faculty.
* Fast learner capable of adjusting to a changing environment and a growing responsibility.
* Good organizational and time management skills.
* Able to set and prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and work in a team environment.
* Keen attention to details.
* Eligible to obtain P. Eng. designation.
* Knowledge of laboratory health/safety regulations and standards.
* Will require use of respiratory protection and enrollment in the university?s Respiratory Protection Program.
* Physical ability to perform primary responsibilities attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to the University?s satisfaction (e.g. ability to lift, carry and move, equipment weighing up to 25 kg without assistance and up to 45 kg with assistance).
* Willingness to undertake any necessary training and deliver in-house training to others.
