*Overview of the Position:*
Being a newcomer to Canada especially can face many challenges such as adjusting to a new culture and life, culture shock, social isolation, trauma and anxiety/stress related to getting permanent housing, employment, self-care and care about family members who were left behind back home etc. The Mental Health Worker will have intake and need assessment and support as well as liaison with existing our programs/services that supports newcomers.
The responsibilities of this position:
* Provide intake and assessment of client needs, assets and challenges and provide orientation services in a culturally sensitive manner.
* Provide individual support and follow-up to clients addressing their settlement needs identified during the intake assessment and facilitate a full range of wrap-around services.
* Identify and prioritize newcomers? settlement needs and facilitates referrals to other programs within the agency and appropriate community services
* Provide a variety of individualized on-site supports including addressing immediate housing needs, accessing financial assistance and medical supports, working with families, crisis prevention/intervention, advocacy, referrals to other services, etc.
* Assists newcomers to establish and maintain links with appropriate resources including services relating to employment, language training, settlement, general health care, volunteer opportunities, etc.
* Provide short-term crisis counselling to newcomers and the well-being of the family members.
* Liaises and collaborates with other mental health and justice service providers, mobile crisis teams, hospitals, physicians, community workers, substance abuse programs, and family members on behalf of clients
* Assist newcomers to understand their rights and responsibilities as new Canadians
* Identify need for immigration related services and provide the process of immigration
* Provide a variety of individualized on-site supports including, but not limited to, addressing immediate short-term housing needs, accessing financial aid, assessing medical supports, working with families, crisis prevention / intervention, advocacy, referrals to other services, etc.;
* Deliver all services in a professional manner and according to established guidelines and associated benchmarks
* Provide supportive counselling and health teaching to clients, families and/or significant others on typical recovery and lifestyle issues throughout all stages of recovery.
* Offer culturally competent crisis counselling and support to start new life in Canada.
* Identify triggers from newcomers? past and provide culturally appropriate and trauma informed counselling services
* Plan and create activities that help newcomers cope with stress/anxiety and set realistic expectation.
* Establish and maintains excellent working relationships and communication with internal and external groups
* Identify cause of stress and advise the ways to cope even in the worst of times and manage some of that stress
* Actively participate with team members in the assessment, planning and evaluation of the client and his/her care.
* Participate in the development, implementation and follow-up of the client goal plan.
* Keep accurate and detailed administrative records of services and activities and completes required reports
* Other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Experience:
* Must have Bachelor of Social Work Degree from accredited Faculty of Social Work/Psychology/Health-related discipline
* Minimum of 2 years post B.S.W. experience with proven ability to provide mental health counselling
* Experience in facilitating clients effectively both in community and within health service organizations
* Experience working with families from diverse communities and backgrounds in community settings
* Knowledge of, and working experience of LGBTQ+, violence against women and/or seniors is an asset
* Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in stressful
