Instructors ensure that participants have a positive experience and are performing the skills in a safe manner as set out in the established programs. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by a supervisor in terms of effectiveness of instruction and services provided and conformance to established practices. This position will support the 2024 Fall/Winter season and 2025 Spring season, Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Hockey programs.Candidates will complete an on and off-ice interview and need to be available for two (2) of the following dates: Sundays - 10:30 am - 12:30 pm, Mondays/Wednesdays - 3:30 pm - 7:30 pm, Tuesdays - 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm, and Friday 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm. Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:Instructs programs, such as learn to skate beginners hockey and the basics of other arena sports, using techniques in compliance with program standards Performs set up and take down of equipment Checks the equipment is in good working order by making minor adjustments and informing supervisors when repairs are required Demonstrates skating techniques to induvial and groups of all ages and abilities Maintains a variety of routine records and reports Prepares individual program plans for review by a supervisor Ensures the public areas, such as arena, lobby, washrooms and skate shop are clean, safe and free of obstacles by picking up litter, etc.The successful candidate for this position will have:Completion of Grade 11 Standard First Aid Skate Instructor Level 1: NCCP Theory Certification or a Skate Instructor Course of equivalent Two (2) months full-time equivalent experience working with children in a related field Skate Instructor Level 2: Recognized NCCP Theory Certification and a Skate Instructor Course Four (4) months full-time equivalent experience working with children in a related field including 40 hours of skate instruction Why should you consider working for us?An hourly starting wage of $20.59 (2024 rate of pay), plus 12% in lieu of benefits and statutory holidays, and a living wage adjustment We take our work seriously but not ourselves We have a positive attitude about the work we perform We care deeply about our community Our organization is the ideal size for you to make a difference and have an impact We have a strong learning culture and want our people to grow and succeed We are a living wage employerQualified individuals are encouraged to apply online by August 9, 2024, at www.portcoquitlam.ca/cityjobs quoting competition number 24-107c.
