At the Loyan Foundation, we believe in reducing exposure to violence by building a more united, safer, and stronger East African community. Through effective outreach, education and collaboration we empower and support East African youth and their families to learn how to live healthy and successful lives.
*What you will do*
* Support with the coordination of Loyan Foundation Foodbank and oversee activities of the special events coordinator.
* Conduct a meta analysis on gaps in food accessibility for communities in Toronto and the the GTA focusing on pain points that can be addressed with inter organization collaboration.
* Conduct phone and virtual interviews with organizations focusing to better understand gaps in food accessibility in Toronto and the GTA
* Conduct research on softwares and initiatives that can bridge accessibility of food banks and communities to individuals that need assistance.
* Research and call Black business owners to inquire about number of Black businesses that are leveraging Canada Summer Jobs program and wage subsidies
* Research and conduct phone interviews with a number of Black and small businesses that hire during the summer.
* Research a number of small grassroots organizations and conduct phone interviews that are leveraging Canada Summer Jobs program and wage subsidies in Toronto and GTA.
* Create a research summary report with recommendations.
* Leverage Vertex AI and Kaggle to conduct thematic coding following phone interviews with organization staff interviews.
* Attend weekly meetings and check-in with staff.
* Develop a research proposal for implementation of the recommendations
* Create a summary report along with recommendations.
* Attend forums and events focused on food accessibility in Toronto and take notes.
*What you will gain*
* Relevant experience on how to use AI softwares for in supporting research analysis.

* Experience developing research proposals.
*What we are looking for*
* Self identifies as a Black youth.
* University undergraduate or recent graduate with a background in Biological Sciences, Health Science, or related study *required*.
* Community Based research training experience
* Strong research interests with the intention of applying to graduate school or med school in the near future.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Strong note-taking skills and interpersonal skills.
* Strong time management and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
* Creative and analytical and enjoys writing.
* Strong teamwork skills with demonstrated ability to work independently on projects.
* Constantly demonstrates a professional attitude.
* Familiar with zoom and google meets.
* Strong demonstrated ability to project meet deadlines.
